way back

way back

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

the flowers you planted in my soul
still bloom

the way your eyes undressed me
still entices

i wonder if you know
the aroma of sunscreen still takes me back
way back

and when it does...i smile

Lydia,
Isn't it funny how quick the trip when triggered by the smell, odor, aroma... takes us there at the speed of light so we can take a moment to linger, like we were, like the things were, like the music was, like the look in their eye... It is against all the laws of physics to go back in time, but the roads are so enticing...

Beautifully penned brevity that compliments the equally beautiful painting, brimming with moving, heartfelt imagery of love once eagerly implanted by two soulmates that even after many seasons gone by those flowers still bloom bright in the heart...

I love this. I recall many a time when a single smell would take me back to a long ago place. Excellent writing. ~Jim

Smiling and waving across the miles, Lydi.
The human mind is so, so fascinating. I have always thought so, I will always think so. And I find it absolutely beautiful that you were able to capture the moment of a scent triggering memory, because it happens just like this. I often get it with perfumes or food scents, but this is also true. It can bring flashes of memory to the forefront of the brain, and its almost like living the moment again. For better, or sadly, for worse.

You, however, make this feel like the beautiful journey it can be. Your words are light, soft, and airy, giving it a nostalgic feel and gives the reader the ability to float in that sort of dreamlike state you've so perfectly mimicked. There's a sort of playfulness hinted at throughout that almost makes the reader wonder what memory is connected to that scent of sunscreen, but honestly, you made the right move in not telling. All of this is executed perfectly, and I feel honored I got to read it. Thank you for the share!

What a wonderful review, Emunah. Thank you so much. Yes, scents can hold many memories. Lydi**
I'm living in the moments these days without much time for waxing nostalgic. That might be a good thing. But we do tend to hold onto the wonderful memories of yesterday. I think of my parents more often than anything. I like the romantic nuance of this.

The way I see it, we can live or remember living. But we can't do both at the same time.
Wow… this really is a lovely one isn't it.🌸 The way you wrote about memories... flowers, eyes, even sunscreen... it feels so real and alive. It made me smile too, like I could feel those moments with you. Thank you for sharing this cozy little poem with us. Loved it so much. Truly... because of the simplicity this poem holds.
Nicely done.
