Beacon In White

Beacon In White

A Poem by Mavis Bard

They say there’s something in the way she moves

They say there’s something deep within her smile

But what they don’t know is what they can’t see -

The beauty that glows beyond a nautical mile

Do you believe in ever after?

Do you believe in eternity?

If love guides your belief in life

What guides your belief in me?

An effervescence of gaiety

Somehow calms this violent sea

Inside me

Deep inside me

Your innocence is life

Your innocence is true

Your innocence is what

Makes you, you

A beacon full of light

A beacon dressed in white

Guides this wretched ship of darkness

Safely through the night

Sink as I swim, choke as I breathe

All of the stars have fallen out of reach

My eyes fade to black, yet she waits for me there

With sleek soft skin, emerald eyes, and starlit hair

Just give me a kiss

I truly believe this is a poem to be savored slowly, again and again. Each time I've read it I've found something new to focus on, which send me back to the beginning to figure out why I missed it at first. While I'm certainly no expert, I think that may be a mark of a strong poem. As lyrics, since it's a little dark, I hope the music is not exactly upbeat but not dirgelike.
