Dear Uncle Sam,
Though you think you're a man,
In it, I know you had a hand:
A black hand and evil heart,
Playing the Devil's card;
Though your beard be white,
And you look dapper-like
In your Stars and Stripes,
You played at once
A traitor and bitter tart.
Admitting as much to us
Would be a good start.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. They never come clean. Whether or not they were ever good or just corrupted at some point, I think one can judge the fruit. I think the American experiment has several junctures in which it was forced by ulterior motives forward, no matter how good the people intended it to be. The people are not running the show, however.

Oh CD, I totally agree. What’s that proverb about hands that dig dirt are honest ones? I don’t recall it. Probably biblical, but I don’t profess to know the specific proverbs anymore. Great comment.

I like the way you include when this was written, to show how it's still very applicable today, if not more so. I like your sarcastic observations about the worn-out idioms & trappings that signify the great world power that we always like to believe we are. We can deny culpability no longer, and yes those trappings are just symbols of our waning power. But we can be a proud nation again, getting back to the way it ought to be, helping out our neighbors and doing things for our own good, which our people deserve. Don’t sh*t in our own, my grandma would say. And that’s what we’ve essentially done by worrying about what’s in other nests around the world, I believe.
