A Poem by Melinda F. Shepard

Sitting here upon my couch
I think of you
Of the ways you make me laugh
Of how you always try to make me happy
You take all my burdens upon yourself
Wanting me to be happy
For that is what you say
But how can I be happy
You can’t rely on me
Tell me your problems
Let me into your troubled mind
Please let me know your burdens
Let me into your mind
Your life
Your heart
You say don’t worry
Don’t trouble my mind
Useless words they are to me
What do I lack?
Why do you not trust me?
You say you love me
You say I ease your troubled mind
But how
You say never fear
For fear will tear us apart
It already has
