A love too late

A love too late

A Poem by Melinda F. Shepard

My love this was never meant to be
This love so true, so deep
You and me

The time we spend
The laughter we make
The love we take

I have another
Who is strong and true
Why does my soul ache for thee

My foolish heart
My traitorous heart
Cries in pain and yearns
For your simple touch

I must not will not
Allow your touch
I have another
I must be faithful to

My spiteful heart
Split in two for you

I tell it to turn away
That I can not love thee
But it will not heed me

Oh my love
You came too late
I will never forget thee
My heart will always love you

Thank you for loving me.

I love the emotion in this piece. The inner conflict of a "traitorous" heart that yearns both for the warmth that it receives from its lover, but also for the opportunity to right whatever wrongs it's committed and be genuinely noble. I think that's a beautiful conflict, and one that I myself have known personally.

I couldn't help feeling that the beginning of the poem was a bit fragmented. The sentences were done very simply, which in this instance seemed to leave the reader hanging and needing a little bit more substance. That could easily be fixed by shooting for some kind of uniformity when it comes to sentence structure, which you did (whether intentionally or not) later in the poem. It helped tremendously.

Oh my love
You came too late
I will never forget thee
My heart will always love you
Thank you for loving me.
