Listen to the Room

This is a piece inspired by what my music director tells us when he wants us to quiet down before we begin to play. He tells us to "listen to the room" and so I took that and ran with it.

Listen to the room.
Silent, inviting noise.
There will be a time to play,
but for now,
listen to the room,
and wait for that moment
when you can fill the silence
with your music
and give the room a new sound.
But for now,
just listen to the room.

Author's Note

Why was I inspired by such an innocent phrase? At 11pm, anything and everything is inspiring.
