Light

Light

A Poem by Midnight's Mistress

I view myself as a large searchlight.
I scream out "I AM HERE".
People see me, even if they don't want to.
I light up whatever interests me, making everyone else see it.

Some people view me as police lights.
I flash and squeal for attention.
I will follow you down until you stop and see me.
Most people roll their eyes at the sight of me.

Others view me as a porch light.
I show them where the door is.
I shine all night long for them.
I invite them in by giving them a break from the darkness.

A few know me as the sun.
I rise and set everyday.
I keep their skin warm
I am there all day long, even behind the clouds.

Sometimes I wish I was a candle.
Very small light with a good smell.
Sitting on top of their cake.
Mostly there to give a bit of light but also there to look nice.

Instead I am all of them.
Quiet as a candle, loud as a searchlight.
As annoying as a siren and as welcoming as a porch light.
But always as reliable as the rising sun.
