Pascal's Wager

Pascal's Wager

Pascal’s Wager

The hypothesis that God is real

has a sane, mechanical appeal

like the turning of a ferris wheel.

To withhold belief erroneously

would be to think feloniously

against the possibility

of afterlife tranquility.

Thus do we vanquish life’s tragic flaw

secure and safe, like good bourgeois

supposing belief can be manufactured

to allow us in a backward

way, to tiptoe into heaven

tail end of a thought procession

as if it falls to our discretion

to take what can only be given.
