Leg Over Jellyroll

Leg Over Jellyroll

A Poem by Avery Colt

Heave a leg over

Sleeping Jellyroll,

Rising balletic

On a knee,

Balancing awkward in the dark,

Not to wake the easy dreamer.

(In that moment seems

An artful housebreaker’s escape

Followed in stealthy naked steps,

She’s alluring, still pursuing,

Has the firmer footing.)

If she stirs I’ll stay,

If I misjudge the weight poised over her,

Inexpertly nudge a vertebrae,

Or worse, simply collapse,

What stirrings then!

But though she rolls and shifts as I come over,

Breathes on my skin low startling murmur,

She still sleeps.  Quietly I dress.  My coat is on.

A last light kiss is wafted on the sir,

And then I’m gone.
