Sandcastle

A Poem by Kady R.
"

A relationship built on something as temporary as a sandcastle.

"
The castle was already built….with sand
Many were in awe
It had ornate and intelligent design
And yet there was something….wrong

I was a stranger to this place
The rules and laws were already built
To “keep the peace”
As a stranger you…..conform

I had ideas and opinions
Which apparently needed……changing
The perfect specimen of a project
Lively, opinionated and yet….still finding her voice

The subjects of this place were…“interesting”
A prince and princess that knew…”too much”
A King which divorced his wife, from what I heard
The story changed every time they spoke

Among a series of unfortunate events I ended up with the prince
Not knowing each other well enough this should be…..”interesting”

The prince was expecting…more
More than what I could give
The library had many books where I'd study
And…..I…started….to….change

Speak only when the prince is done talking…..which he never did
Dress only what is chosen for me….which wasn't my style

I don’t know what caused this burning sensation of acceptance all of a sudden.
The King and their stepmother were never satisfied and yet the prince was constantly in their presence.
It reflected in our relationship…..together….I guess

And yet I had a bad feeling
“Who built this palace” I asked being careful
“The whole family” the prince spoke proudly and then went on speaking

I must escape this place
This castle will fall
Be washed away and they don't see it
But by then I'll be gone

This place was heavily guarded
And this family was proud of their possessions
Which I was constantly reminded of
So I found a way

Out in our travels, I'll escape
He wouldn't make a scene…..hopefully
So I waited
And waited
And waited
For the right time
To be free……. to…..be….me

I enjoyed reading this. It reminded me of the song, Castles Made of Sand, by Jimi Hendrix and it's one of my personal favorites. The fragility of our existence is such that our expectations of the permanent are nothing but illusion. We must enjoy what we can of life while we yet have the life and ability to enjoy it. Tomorrow never comes and it isn't ever promised to anyone, honestly. I'm not saying it's deceitful to plan or expect a tomorrow but to promise one to another is not within our power or ability because we have no power over our own current existence, let alone the future of it. The tides come and the waves roll in and everything we hold dear is eventually swept away, even our lives. I appreciate the metaphor and juxtaposed comparisons made in your work. It's always wonderful to be around people we know we can be "ourselves" with; never to worry if our words or meanings might be misconstrued or be forced to walk on the eggshells of their tender insecurities. Good work. F.

Wow. This piece feels like a quiet rebellion wrapped in poetry. The castle made of sand is such a strong image it looks beautiful on the outside, but it’s fragile and built on something that won’t last. Kady, your poem shows how hard it is to live in a world where you’re expected to fit in, stay silent, and give more than you have. But even through all that, there’s a spark of strength. I felt your journey the pressure, the confusion, the quiet planning and finally, the decision to leave. It’s moving and real, and the ending feels like a breath of freedom. You've told a deep and emotional story with grace. It almost felt like I was with you during the journey and experienced everything myself. Beautifully done.

Hiiii Ayesshaaa!! I'm glad you read this poem. I'm very happy you enjoyed it🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰
Relationships built on sand are destined to fail. Solid foundations are required. A strong metaphor used in this finely crafted poem. Well done.

Thanks Buttefly!! They are destined to crumble. Thanks again for the review🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰
Sandcastles are like houses that have such beauty and creative design but are not made with strong materials.
Relationships can be the same...there is beauty on the surface but if the structure is weak, the relationships fail.
Love it,

I like your metaphor here, Kady……..any relationship that seems to have its foundations in shifting sands was probably destined to crumble, not from the engineering of the “castle” but by those involved in the making of it.

Some families exist in a power dynamic and when outsiders are brought into the fold, they too, become trapped in that power vacuum. Instead of being a loving, relationship based on mutual respect one side tends to dominate the other and keeps them in submission. One should never conform to any ideals in a relationship. To do so just leads to trouble and a loss of self identity. I think you chose wisely and took the correct pathway to freedom and happiness.

An unfortunate circumstance but at least you have come out better on the other side of it. I enjoyed the write.
