You Get Me Through The Week

A Poem by MRL
"

A real conversation I had with my little cousin on her birthday....It's amazing how smart kid's really are

"

You Get Me Through The Week

My little cousin asked me
When she turned six years old
Am I finally a grownup
If not when will I know

I said you'll hate what was important
The things that got you through
And suddenly you'll be loving
The things you never knew

But it doesn't come on your birthday
Just one day you'll know
It's a lesson learned with time
Not something that your told

She asked what I liked better
Being old or young
I replied with a smile
Then just gave a little shrug

To each there own I'm told
But I prefer the simple days
When I was young and innocent
And couldn't wait to get out and play

Growing brings you trouble
But it also helps you learn
And I grew up way too fast
Promise you'll wait your turn

Your always growing older
But you can never go back
So have fun while you can
Always remember that

And remember that I'll be here
Whenever you need me
Growing up is so much fun
But I promise it's not easy

So do you still wanna be older
Or do you think it can wait
She said I'm good at being little
Let's leave the rest to fate

I think thats a good idea
Your smarter then you look
Just sit back and ride it through
Then write yourself a book

Or be the first girl President
Or be a funny clown
No matter what you chose
You'll always make me proud

She said mommy said to me
Before she went away
To listen up to you
And do everything you say

She said your really smart
But sometimes you forget
But you'll keep me really safe
And make sure that I don't quit

Well I promised your mommy
When you were really little
That I'd protect you with everything
You can be sure that I will

She said mommy said the family
Might say bad things
About the way that you are
And the shame that it brings

I made a lot of bad decisions
When I was a lot younger
Some people can forgive
And with some it just takes longer

Plus the family doesn't know me
Like you and mommy do
And there words don't bother me
So don't let them bother you

All that matters to me
Is what you happen to think
Your life gives me purpose
It gets me through the week

So let's talk a little later
You have gifts to open up
And you have candles to blow out
I think I've helped enough

She smiled up at me
And said your my favorite cuz
You teach me to be strong
And you always give me love

And I know you'll always be here
By what you said to me
You gave me the bestest gift you could
You gave me the power to believe
