Walk

Walk

A Poem by JR Darewood

You walk alone

with your indomitable soul

weathering the storms

a ship through a squall in a sea of lightning

You walk alone

with your independent spirit

battered by fate

bloodied and crawling to the finish line

You walk alone

with your beloved freedom

your only company a chill in the night

in the chasm-like solitude that surrounds you

You walk alone

with your indefatigable fortitude

oblivious as time grows long

and our years grow short

You walk alone

unstoppable

until the inevitable end

arrives on life's horizon

Will you be alone

when your legs grow weak,

when your eyes grow tired,

when your bones begin to shake

when your fingers fail

when you stare at last into the abyss?

There will be no one to hold your hand

when your strength is gone

when it hurts too much to go on

when terror strikes

when death's maw gapes to devour your soul

You walk alone,

my friend,

but one day

you will walk

no more.

Author's Note

JR Darewood
Would this work better if I changed "you" to "I"?
Maybe this would be more powerful in first person.

I like the 'you'. Compassion is a lost art.
