Teach Me to Be a Woman

Teach Me to Be a Woman

A Poem by Mrs MelRose

Teach Me to Be a Woman

What is a woman?
I had no idea
But for whatever it was worth to me
I know what a lady was

To walk around in high heels
To wear makeup and pleated skirts
To walk and talk at the same time
With purse in hand and heart on sleeve

I walk around in the high heels
I wear the makeup and love the pleated skirts
My life is spent on my feet and on the phone
With my purse in my hand and my heart on my sleeve

But why am I still not a woman?

So you gave me the training to walk in those heels
After years of falling, I mastered it
You taught me to iron the pleats of my skirts
So as I walk they twirl just so, wrinkle free

You taught me to talk and also to walk
And together they get me everywhere in my life
And with my purse/survival bag in my manicured hands
I become the social butterfly and the laughter in your hearts

Yet I ask you "Teach me to be a Woman"

And finally, you explained it to me
“Any one can be a woman
But in teaching you to be a lady
You have learned to be a woman”

“Patience, Love, Gentleness
Laughter, Nurture, Nature, Technology
Domestic skills, personality traits
Confidence, Wisdom, and Determination

These are what make you a woman

And most important
Anyone can be a woman
But it takes time and special work to be a lady
And you have mastered them both”
