Paper Airplanes

Paper Airplanes

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Paper  Airplanes

crumpled balls of paper

begin to accumulate

in my waste basket

day after day

they become nothing more

than unfinished attempts

at writing poetry

and what could have been

paper airplanes.

even when words don't find you, thoughts will. I love Paper Airplanes - it reminded me of my childhood and brought back those wonderful memories to the fore. a simple, honest write that captures the poet's mind. I like the expression here and memories it evoked, and thanks for sharing this, Kelly.

Doesn't matter if you fill a thousand waste baskets, if it is in you to write, you will never stop.

Love the contemplative aura you have created with these words.

Thank you, Beccy! I pray it will never stop.
How unfortunate that our muses, whom we depend on so much, are fickle and flighty, prone to go on walkabouts. If only we could secure them to a leash.

Thank you, Sam. Always good to see you!
I'm thinking if they had their choice they would choose to be poems knowing their life would be longer lived than the glide across the room only to end up under the recliner. I envision the trash man discovering them and being inspired to try his hand at the art of poetry. - we have to dream do we not - a very honest and clean piece of work - enjoyed it - carl

This piece piles with potential, Kelly.

I wanna encourage you: pick up those cannon balls and fly them anyway!
Sooner or later they'll smooth out the wrinkles in their spirit 🙏

Thank you, Lara! Good to meet you!
From someone who stopped writing for many years until today, you’re describing the sentiment I feared in those days.. feared that my mind and my pen would betray me.. that words will fail to find me.. and I’ll be left feeling hollow.. as hollow as my empty pages

That’s a great way of approaching it.. yes one fallen leaf could be the seed to a new writing !
Yes, I understand this from a lot of experience.
For every nine misses it's possible you get a great hit!
We just need to keep trying.
Actually, the real importance was reminded to me by a man named Leonard Cohen. He once said:
“For me, art is the evidence of life and not the life itself. It is the ashes of something that has burned very well, and sometimes we confuse ourselves, and we try to create the ashes instead of the fire.”
Just keep present in your life, the writing is always secondary to that aliveness.

I like paper airplanes. I'd never made one that flew worth a crap though until my daughter asked me to make her one. So I looked up and followed the directions to making a world record holding paper plane. Never ever seen a paper plane that looked like the finished product. But it flew fantastically; forty or fifty feet outside. Poetry is easy. Making paper planes is harder. (laughing) My oldest makes origami swans. I have one somewhere. If the tail is pulled it flaps its wings. But having read your poetry I certainly wouldn't throw any of it away either. It's those broken thoughts that need cohesion or adhesion or something to pull or string them together. I enjoyed the read.

Thanks for the encouragement, Thomas!
Oh yes, every poet can identify with your words. Sometimes the best way to end a writers block is to write about it. Always enjoy your poetry Kelly. Lydi****
