The Marsh

The Marsh

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

The Marsh

Migrating birds

of egrets,

glossy ibis

and blue heron

descend from a pallid  sky,

foraging wet fields

and hollow reeds of the marsh.

As the tranquility of morning unfolds

like a ballet upon water.

In my area ... Essex County ... there are vast marshes ... Point Pelee for one … and we are on the eastern migratory route and can see huge flocks of various birds in flight. Great flocks of Canada Geese ... Kestrels ... Red-winged Blackbirds and many different song birds. Your words evoke that sense of home for me.

Good job Kelly

Your review brings the imagery to life. Thank you, Ted!
This reminds me of being in Trinidad in 1970. We took a long boat ride on a river to get to a spot where there was this giant tree out in the middle of the water. And exactly at 6:10 every evening a large flock of Scarlet Ibis show up, lite on the tree for about five minutes, and then take off. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life.
Thanks for the reflection of that event.

Kelly, You know how much I like birds! From my balcony I feed song birds, jays and crows in violation of the landlord’s rules. Your poem is lovely. If you witness this ballet from your own home, I am envious. You stirred loose an old memory. We used to live near the west end of the Seattle ship canal where it meets the sea, where the back side of Queen Anne is wooded. We would set out at sunrise for weekend bike rides, making an early stop for coffee and breakfast where across the canal we could watch fifty or a hundred egrets all rise at once from the trees to begin their day, truly a majestic sight. Thank you for sharing your experience of beautiful birds.
