That Girl

That Girl

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

that girl

i’m that girl

with eyes of a different hue

who loves the rain and poetry

and coffee with cream

two sugars.

i’m that girl

whose favorite Beatle was john

who fell in love with Wuthering Heights

and watched it a thousand times.

the girl who wrote “his” name

on every book in high school

but never once turned his head.

i’m that girl

the one he came running to

when “she” broke his heart

who plucked the petals off daisies

to find he loved me not

who didn’t have a date for the prom

or a dad to give her away

when she married…

i’m that girl

who talks to the moon

who sat alone on a Saturday night

playing records on the stereo

who dreamed of a ring he gave to her…

i’m that girl.

i’m that girl.

You're a girl who loves life and all the beauty it has to offer. A girl with quiet inner strength who takes the negatives in her stride and creates positivity from them. You're a girl with a wealth of insight who loves with all her heart. And a beautiful poet too!

Its a joy always, dear Kelly. You're always welcome. 💕
this reads like a journey, a journey of self through those times, of past and present - i'm that girl .. it is beautifully laid out and descriptive with memories. sometimes, we need to remind who we are, or were, just to reassure ourselves. There's a sense of strength in the voice and a bit of nostalgia too here. I like the way it flows and all the images that it paints. wonderful writing, Kelly. you always write your heart, it shows! thanks for sharing this piece.

No you're NOT … you can't be!

Yet, considering your list of spurned affirmations, Dear Kelly, in comparison to the You I've come to know and adore 🌈🍷 if I were to assume this poignantly laid Free Verse piece is factual, I'd say you'd spent wayyy too much time amongst blind-hearted dolts, who couldn't perceive the incomparably wondrous treasures of authentically bona fide inner and outer beauty, gentle kindness, and a caring heart -- if it bit them on their apathetically self-centered glutei maximi.

Bearing all that in mind, I'd like to believe the truth is that this poem was birthed within the amazingly creative depth of your boundless imagination … otherwise, I'd have to give you HUGE HUGS of deservedly comforting consolation. 🤗

Whichever it might be, it's definitely another awesomely rendered piece from your ultra-skilled pen, for which I'm so effusively grateful.

Though the central words have a melancholic tone... the repetitive usage of "that girl" reinforces a sense of strength, resilience and ownership of one's journey. Well done!

Ah Kelly, Kelly, Kelly……you make me want to go back in time and ask you for a date, maybe even treasure you for who you are. A really lovely poem of self-awareness.

I am still waiting for you to write anything I don’t love. You are a great writer.

This for me is a deeply emotional piece about the nature of feeling left out or misunderstood in some way.....
I guess it's a human experience and something that we all feel to a certain degree at times, even the most confident among us...

But you express yourself clearly and succinctly here and I like the way the poem flows,....you take the reader on a journey...

Thanks for sharing

Thank you. If it was a journey for you, then I did my best!
Oh Kelly, you have the most beautiful soul, the kind of girl I would have been instant friends with. We cannot base our worth by the judgement of the world because it’s twisted beyond compare. In my mind you are simply golden and always were. I just love this!

Hi Kelly!
I love the timeline on this journey…. “I’m that girl”… love the repetition in this piece; the theme to me is bittersweet; many disappointments however; “ that ring he gave to her”…. You chose your words perfectly to set the mood….Bravo!
