That Girl

That Girl

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

that girl

i’m that girl

with eyes of a different hue

who loves the rain and poetry

and coffee with cream

two sugars.

i’m that girl

whose favorite Beatle was john

who fell in love with Wuthering Heights

and watched it a thousand times.

the girl who wrote “his” name

on every book in high school

but never once turned his head.

i’m that girl

the one he came running to

when “she” broke his heart

who plucked the petals off daisies

to find he loved me not

who didn’t have a date for the prom

or a dad to give her away

when she married…

i’m that girl

who talks to the moon

who sat alone on a Saturday night

playing records on the stereo

who dreamed of a ring he gave to her…

i’m that girl.

i’m that girl.

Sounds like the typical girl next door experience to me. I had four sisters growing up and the times I remember were them doing each others hair, weaving daisy chains and bringing their dates home to meet mom and dad. I was the youngest so naturally I was a pest most of the time. I remember one of my sisters dating a drummer in a rock band and he gave me a pair of his drumsticks. She bought them from me for two dollars. I loved Wuthering Heights as well and all the Bronte sisters. Such a nice snapshot of that girl.

Growing up with four sisters, you must have been very protected. Motherly instincts have a habit o.. read more
I grew up in the times of steady dating, giving someone our high school ring...feeling
secure to have the date for the prom...and then I grew up and faced real life, broken marriages, parents and friends leaving this world for another...I'm that boy who still plays records on his stereo...all oldies from way back...and my favorite Beatle was George...but John a close second.
"Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try...no hell below us, nothing only sky"
Love this poem Kelly....

I think the hype of a prom is more geared towards the girl, especially with the choosing of the gown.. read more
And we wouldn't have you any other way Kelly! 😃
As for the school prom, they weren't even a thing when I was at school, although we have caught up a bit now. So much so in fact that school kids of all ages have a prom each year... even kindergartners!
If only I'd known I'd have taken you, although the ride home after would have been a bit hellish! 😃
We are all just that girl or guy, with the good as well as the bad, highlights and lowlights, bruises and marks we wear with pride, that prove we made it and that make us who we are.

Lol. You have my blessings!
So poignant Kels and given all this, you have done well to come out strong on the other side. I did not have an easy childhood myself, but I did have a Date for the Prom you'll be glad to hear 😁

There's a sadness in these words, but they are outshined by the strength of these same words. You are the girl who weaves simple words in gold and charms even the coldest heart with your verses. I’m glad that girl is my friend. Beautiful work dear poet
