Like John Imagined

Like John Imagined

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

like john imagined

i dare to dream

there’s coffee in heaven,

with a buffet line longer than

any road i have traveled down,

where a beacon of light shines brighter than

flecks of sunlight upon a vast ocean…

i dare to believe

there exists another realm of time

a spiritual place we transition to,

of God’s sovereignty

with no greed or hunger,

just a brotherhood of man.

like john the Apostle, prophesied

like john the Beatle, imagined.

Perhaps such a realm already exists within us in the present moment. Perhaps all we need do is make it first in importance in our lives.

It was always imagined, these things are not real. But if we never imagine them, they will never become real. We idealize ourselves as a species, it makes fools out us most of the time but occasionally we get lucky and transcend the species with our dreams and imagination. Writing is one of those dreams, it probably started with lines in the dirt and a lot of imagination. Even our modern day interpretation of extremely complicated physics came from some dude imagining wild things just sitting there bored out of his mind in an office passing time. Werner Herzog's beautiful documentary The Cave of Forgotten Dreams comes to mind... the imagination we had as a species during those times, to be able to create such lovely cave art while living under such extremely harsh conditions is amazing to me. Imagination, I imagine, might have been our defining trait... our ability to abstract may be our key advantage.

A truly beautiful song--one of the reasons he was my favorite Beatle. (I've since acquired a greater appreciation for the others) Your words give increased meaning to his, and I hope you're right about the coffee.

The coffee reference is gaining momentum. It makes me smile! Thank you, Sam. I hope so, too!

"He thinks of John sometimes and he has to wonder why." from Old Hippie by the Bellamy Brothers. But I'm not taking any chances on there not being coffee in heaven. I'm drinking my share while I'm here. (laughing) Great work as always.

Marvellous Work again Kelly. If this is Lennon's current status with you in San Diego, you can imagine where he stands in his native Liverpool. In 2010 I contributed to the tribute to Lennon on Gold Radio UK, on the 30th Anniversary of his martyrdom. You are in fine Poetic form atm Kelly no doubt at all. Exceptional ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Yes. And in the numerous coffee shops, there is peace and comfort in knowing that the staff don't greet you with "and what can I get you to eat today", or paint shamrocks on your coffee on St Patrick's day or have complex beards and dress like an 18th century cobbler, because it's heaven and everybody knows hipsters aren't allowed there because they have no soul (well, it is my heaven after all!) 😃
But get this... instead of people pretending to be interesting and reading some hip paperback in the hope that someone will notice them and find them interesting, you are met with people smiling... actual smiles, not emojis as you look at the top of their heads as they tap away on their cell phone.
Plus, everyone gets a free cake with every cup, which is also free because cash would only corrupt in heaven, so you pat with a smile and no one takes a picture of their moccalattecino and posts it online, like they grew the coffee from scratch, all for a like or two to make them feel something in their mundane reality of life.
And what was I saying again? Something about coffee good and four legs bad.... 🎶 it's easy if you try 🎶 😃

Wow, Kelly, I love this but I wish you had just let it go at “brotherhood of man”.

I think this is one of the most difficult lessons, one I still fight: how to end a poem. More and more I’m understanding that best way is not to slam the door with a thump, but to let the last page fall with a whisper.

I, too, want to hold on to that belief. A much needed piece of writing given the harsh times we find ourselves in.

Your perspective is exactly what this poem needed. So true, Mary. So true! Thank you, my friend!
