Vintage Chevrolet

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Vintage Chevrolet

my mom’s keys

to her ’57 Chevy

adorn my keychain.

it was a memory

worth keeping

like ballet shoes

and high school yearbooks,

something tangible

that traversed through the years

long after she passed away

like the deck of cards

for solitaire,

her cigarette case

and reading glasses for crossword puzzles.

tangible and real

palpable to the touch

i hold the keys

in the palm of my hand,

a resurgence of life

stirs briefly,

ever sweetly

picturing my mom behind the wheel

of her ‘57 Chevy.

Hiii Kelly,

Kelly this poem is simplistic in it form and yet its realistic. Those pair of glasses of crossword made me think of the time when I was playing crossword puzzle in a hot afternoon day, underneath the ac blowing around a mist of people. This poem is so relatable and wonderfully worded.

Thanks for sharing Kelly🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰 and I'm sorry for your loss. I hope all is going well.

Thank you, Mary!
Kelly - A heartfelt, elegant poem. One that feels very personal yet speaks to anyone who has held on to an object after a loved one’s passing. It’s the kind of piece that makes this reader reflect on their own cherished keepsakes.

Well done.

Your presence here is most appreciated, Arthur. Thank you!
This one really made me smile!

Kelly,
I also once owned a Chevy; it was a '57 Bel Air convertible, soft butter yellow, white canvas top, silver leather seat covers, 4 on-the-floor, 283ci 220hp Carter AFB carburetor, with fender skirts, twin smitties, dual lake pipes, and 3-flipper hubcaps. I heated the springs and lowered it all around 'til a pack of Camel regulars standing on end barely fit between frame and pavement. It bounced like a stagecoach down the road, but we were cool scrunched-down, cruisin' through Prince's Drive-In, and the girls loved riding along, too … LOL!

She was sooo beautiful and I was sooo young and vibrantly alive, listenin' 'n singin' along to pop 'n rock tunes on the 8-track and AM radio … I often daydream of her, wishing she is still mine. Sighhh!

Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends … so many to remember from what they left for us in our hearts, in pictures and memorabilia they actually touched, owned, and imbued with their very beings' energies … those keepsakes we hold and treasure so dearly.
You've your mother's keys to keep her close and alive; I, my father's fishing tackle and gear, personal pistol, shotgun, and 30.06 hunting rifle, Craftsman tools and tool chest, with countless moments spent with him sharing them all. Mother's sweet heart, kind 'n giving nature, patience, and generosity, hugs, kisses, tender healings, amazing meals, and beautiful smile are my fondest keepsakes, along with her favorite photo album … with me in it, too, of course. : )

Wow, Kelly! Your wonderfully laid poem really touched deep, inspiring me to share so much of myself, which I rarely do.
But, I'm happy you did.

Thanks for sharing You … smiles 'n hugs! ⁓ Richard 🔑

Its such a pleasure, dear Kelly. Keep writing, my friend. 🌹
What a perfect and personal piece. I have a couple little "artifacts" from my maternal grandmother, including a skeleton key that nobody knew what lock it came from. Strange how easily a trinket can bring the memories of those closest to us back. ~Jim

People pass on,but the footprints of their existence remains in our memories.
The memories are so real sometimes we reach out to experience them again.
People graduate to the after life but the beautiful memories linger on forever.
This is beautiful and powerful Kelly.
It brought back some great memories from my childhood.

Thank you most kindly, Titilayo. So very nice to meet you!
Can't deny the ingenuity and great legacy of American cars.

"tangible and real

That's beautiful. Mom would be so proud of her talented baby girl!
