Tomato with Basil

Tomato with Basil

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

...soup for the soul

tomato with basil

my soul is wintering,

seeking refuge

from unhurried days

in the turning of pages

of a Hemingway novel,

finding solitude and calm

in the slow revolutions

of a spoon

frequently stirred

in a cup

of tomato with basil.

Just made some homemade sauce last night. I'm not a big pasta eater but I put this on some spinach and tomato rotini and it was rapidly consumed by my crew. I love to cook. Hot tea, warm food, fresh baked bread, ah, the sensuous aromas filling the house. Love my comfort food and love this write. F.

Kelly,
Men are so funny... First to mind... "KELLY!" Whoa, what a picture!
But that's not why I'm here. I can't think of few things finer than a quiet cottage, warm and well-stocked to winter in, to do that with two, to winter over in a safe place... But wait, you know, it's not even that... I think it sounds like a time where there is nothing that NEEDS to be done, a time of no worries, no needs, and unhurried days. When I was only 19 I spent my last summer before real life just like that in my grandfather's cottage. No car, no job, and in love with the girl who would become the mother of my two boys. Elon Musk could not buy what that was like... Nor could i.

Your beautiful poem is just the anecdote I needed as I watch my little town in NC get pummeled by snow.
Lovely as this powdery mix is, we know it will be days before anyone can safely leave the house.
Thank you for sharing another one of your mesmerizing writes. They always leave such a warm fuzzy feeling behind. :-)

I get it. Slow revolutions and unhurried days. Retirement makes me want to use that spoon and stir faster.
I think I need hurried...slow isn't always good for some of us.
This is a gem of a metaphor. Hank, my cat, just asked me why she never gets soup for her meal.

a comfortable poem, Kelly. I love Hemingway....
but just a funny thought...
When I saw the title, I immediately thought of one of my all time favorite actors, Basil Rathbone, the real Sherlock Holmes.
Bring me my soup, Watson.

Oh this is classic Kelly; I think I would have recognized this as yours even had it been offered up anonymously. You have a way of taking familiar objects, familiar activities and in a simple way that is somehow magic, with so few words evoke a bigger story. But even more importantly, for me, you strongly evoke MOOD. I love this.
