Set Alite

Set Alite

A Poem by Nandawula Regine Kabali-Kagwa

My heart dropped to the pits
Depths I never thought I had
Darkness I couldn’t imagine ever being in

Yet
Here I was
Holding my dismantled shreds of what remains

Whats left of me to give are lightweight
Heavier than breadcrumbs but lighter than rain
Dull in rich color yet the sweet scent still lingers

Pity

I don’t want them to taste
Sugar lips at the thought of me
Rather, shadows of spice, salt and vinegar

I don’t want their eyes
To sparkle when they land on me
If the mark is me, deem me invalid
Then continue the search for your light source

Its not me
I got no watts to spare
No power big enough for me and another
Just me and me alone

How scornful it was
When I was the light
Heart jumping and beaming in my hands
As I blindly handed it over
Over and over again to shadows masked as suitors

Fucken hell, I was pissed

As I hopelessly watched from across the world
My poor heart being mauled, ravaged, dunked in poison
Then left at the pits of hell to dry out

I ran, from across the world because
I didn’t see in time, how far I have left her
How comfortable, I thought those hands were
Hands I thought were noble and honorable to carry her

Deep sigh
