Awaiting the hangman's noose. I am so against capital punishment. The State reducing itself to the lowly level of the killer. An eye for an eye is not my philosophy of life. Plus of course people were hanged and then proven innocent years later. As for Pierrepoint. How did he sleep at night? Responsible for so many killings blessed by the judiciary. As for the liquor, a small act before an execution to steady the nerves of the condemned. The fear of that rope and the long drop makes me tremble. A short poem Neville which evokes many emotions and sends a shiver down my spine on a cold Sunday.

Nicely done Sir. I read a bit about him when I was writing on the subject of the hangmans tale. Part one was the hangman and part two the victim, but neither managed his feat of cell to drop in 8 seconds. He must have been quite into it to have made it so competitive, or was paid per hang... Or was mader and badder than his clientele.
Never knew that growing up, the town clock was where the deed was done. They did give a massive hint by the place being named Gallowgate, but I somehow missed it. So naive, so innocent, such a dumbass 😀

Doubt she has anything to worry about, we swore a pact, right? 😀
It's been many years since I imbibed, not becuz I have anything against all the fine spirits you mention (love the saucy lilt to your spill), but becuz pot has steadily become more & more legal here! Your poem reminds me of all the memes I see posted on Facebook suggesting that people are drinking their asses off & using our current weird times to justify this pounding need to escape from reality! (((BUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Had to do some research for this review. Mr. Pierrepoint was England's most prolific hangman, springing the trap on hundreds of the condemned, including Lord Haw Haw, Josef Kramer, the commandant of Buchenwald and Irma Griese, the notoriously sadistic female jailer at that concentration camp. Also did the job on spies and US troops who committed capital crimes in Britain. He was nice enough to give his clients a drink before the drop. The poem is well rhymed and would make a great folk ballad. I respect your stance on the death penalty, Chris, but give Pierrepoint his due. You always knew where he stood. He would never leave you hanging.
