A very visual scene of perhaps an African village. A hive of almost cottage industry taking place here. The whole family playing their part so they can afford to live their simple lives. I imagine them all smiling as they earned their daily bread. The final stanza had me smiling too. Yes, they would probably be very content with what they'd got and no doubt would imagine a 9-5 day behind a computer screen hell. Would I wear them? Why not? Keep you warm in winter.
Remember wool? Does anyone wear wool anymore? Maybe it's more common in other places, but in Cali, we are into cooler cotton, even on the chilliest winter day. Also, lots of Cali folks don't own socks. Other than this cultural rift, I love how your poem honors the old ways. I wuz just thinking about how work-intensive life used to be when we butchered our home-raised meat & had to go thru the labor of processing all those various parts for later enjoyment. Speaking of woolen stockings, remember when people would darn socks instead of throwing them away when they got holes? So much is brought to mind by your simple love-filled sentiments (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Delightful. I agree with the poem and wish I had possessed the courage to follow heart instead of head. I have no doubt I would now be richer is so many ways.
Not just a simpler way of life portrayed here Neville, but in so many ways, a much better one.
Those 'poor, rich men tourists and those forced to sit all day behind computers,' really hits home, and I often wonder what on earth we are doing to ourselves.
Beccy.

Yes. The last line bites.
Reminds me of my family back home but instead of stockings it's watermelons or dried peppers, or pickled peppers. And whenever I visit they feel sorry for me for how my life is. And I can't blame them.

Ok. On a serious note. Your poem is lovely because it speaks to all those material things that we don't need when we have our family and those we love. Life need not be complicated.

Idyllic, near Hardyesque! Real thoughts, real scenes how was and should be.. charming. Same way through til that farewell cynicism proves to be as true as can be. Now's the time to plan for living 'stead of watching others do it, do you think?!
