Indeed. They teach us not to take anything for granted, as you just never know when change will come a calling, and it doesn’t always knock politely and wait either.
You also realise the same thing when you fall and tumble 80ft down a hill and realise se too late you stretched too far, but that was a while ago now and I learned to stay away from bloody hills 😀

Two lines, yet they are succinct, well written and profound. Resilience comes to mind Neville. The school of hard knocks teaches us all resilience, the ability to bounce back. It made me think of the bombed sites in London during the war. Complete rubble and yet still the little flower known as London Pride with its pretty pink petals would find a way of springing up to give a little cheer. Where we break, we grow stronger. That's the lesson here.

How very true... but then, we learn how to survive by being hurt, don't we. As ever, your words mean to reach out like a pebble thrown into a deep puddle. Thank you, as always, Neville.
I agree with you dear N. The harder the knocks the better the lesson goes in. They don't call it the school of hard knocks for nothing. I loved this brief impactful message absolutely!

I don't think we will pay attention unless the lesson is hard.
Sometimes my students have to flunk a paper to get serious enough about revising it.
Yes, the hard lessons do speak to us...
I just pray we learn from them...otherwise as a people, as individuals, we will never
improve.

Nothing is learnt softly and tenderly dear sir. The greatest lessons come with the worst of pain. Your words are concise and hard-hitting here. In them I feel a certain kind of hurt that people around us may give us. Lessons learnt too well.
