Calling Time

Calling Time

A Poem by Neville

Calling Time

Today, I feel like an old clock counting moments

upon which

the smug polished patina of time is now the only

thing that shines, he said ..

Then he did smile and eased himself slow and deep

into his favourite chair ..

Whereupon he breathed his last with dust motes

dancing wild and blindly

within the silvered notes of his once dark hair …

Some might feel sadness at this vignette of an elder's last moments, but not this elder. If he's in his favorite chair, it likely means he's home and not bedridden. Give me this any day rather than being consigned to a nursing home and exposed constantly to the demented babblings of Alzheimer's patients and the creeping aroma of a score of incontinent bowels. This old boyo's getting a soft landing after a smooth descent, and that is something with which the millennials have yet to come to terms.

Time reverses when such thoughts come to mind. Yet another rehearsal that memories will never allow. Best merely to dream gentle words and know that a true poet dances on and on.. A sadness set - but not in stone, sir.

.. thank you kindly for your thoughts on this matter ..
Sitting in a favorite chair taking a last breath…

This sounds like a peaceful passing onto the next plane of existence. For me that would be Heaven. This has slight hint of sadness but also a relaxed peaceful feeling.

It is definitely a good way to describe those last moments
This piece speaks to me as I feel the twilight of my days creep slowly upon me. It also doesn't help we live in these days of plague. I hope my end will be as peaceful. Thank you Neville for your words.
