The Wreck of Our Lady

The Wreck of Our Lady

A Poem by Neville

The Wreck of Our Lady

Although breached and not whole

she was once

as near perfect, as ever they come ..

Though broke

but not boarded, she had once been

spectacular ..

Yet now grounded and holed, she is

not fit for

purpose, but only for salvage ..

Since nothing

remains but torn sail cloth, old copper

a few rusty nails, plus

one or two timbers, all worm drilled

and rotting which

collectively serve as some grim reminder

of that yesterdays

voyage, gone so desperately wrong

Yet now wrapped

in a page from a forgotten newspaper

Like chips in the

gutter, whether dropped or discarded

makes no bloody

difference, at all in the long-run, since

Our Lady’s still gone

As ever, Neville, you write with great intensity, creating drama out of something as simple as a small craft. How sad to think of its motley crew ending with its wreck in the depths of Davy Jones' locker.

Just a thought, do I remember you telling me your father was a fine boat builder? Since fibre-glass came into being, surely there are far less of the wood=crafted boats these days?

I had always had a dream of owning a boat and sailing to sea, until I realized how badly sea sick I get. It truly is sad because I so love the ocean. I guess I'm not meant for travel because I also get very car sick after a while. And don't get me started on airplanes which cause me so much anxiety being inside one. I do love the idea of sailing the seas though, but did I also mention my fear of sharks? This was a wonderful yet melancholic poem my friend.

... thank you Carlos .. in the interim, a double dose of stemital might help .. N
The flow of this engaging lament makes reading aloud such a sad pleasure Nev - wrecks are a terrible sight and the feel of their struggles to stay afloat stays long after the boats are beached.....another first class penning my friend.

dear Neville... have you written my Epitaph...
It is not quite that ragged... but made me laugh.
It helps to have a sense of humor... like fluffy white clouds that lie with Lions with Angels hovering around. gently, Pat
