A Very Sudden Realisation

A Very Sudden Realisation

For some odd reason

I just

could not stop myself

from

bringing back all those

bloody apples ..

That’s right,

those I stole from some

old neglected

orchard over there ..

Somewhere beyond

where the black

and the yellow smoke

is no doubt still set

on rising ..

And even now, I recall

the look

you gave when I returned

to you in the back

of that old blue truck ..

With all the red ones

stowed safe

in the makeshift basket

of your pretty

upturned orange umbrella ..

And for a moment then

I felt like some

goddam hero might well

have felt in some

old forgotten movie ..

But then

I remembered the

single hens egg

I hid and then ate raw

on my way back to you ..

And for

the very life of me

I swear, I don’t know

why I did that ..

Maybe, because it was

there and I was

so very, very hungry ..

For some reason war

it seems

can do that to even the

nicest of fellas ..

And then it

dawned on me .. Maybe

I am not such

a f*****g hero after all ..

I read a very definite maybe first thinking the two poems might be related. Boy was I wrong! This poem felt like a snapshot of the human factor that might be lost in an army. Individuals with all their quirks going back to being individuals. And hope the horror of war didn't destroy their individuality.

War changes everything. It all becomes a matter of survival. When you are very, very hungry and in need of food to boost your energy to keep going, then you might act out of your normal comfort zone. Let it be, let it go.

A thought-provoking poem, Neville! None of us know for certain how we will react, if and when the going goes from tough to desperate! War, depredation, fear, hunger... all would test our resolve, and loyalties. An interesting and well-worked write!
