Love Letters

Love Letters

A Poem by Neville

Love Letters

She would read him at night

in the dark

until her eyes, they did ache so ..

And her tears,

beneath the quilt, fell like rain

yet still somehow

each one of them tasted familiar ..

Like the ocean,

she thought, that long ago dared

to take him ..

But what made it worse though

was she could never

be certain, those candles she

burned day and night ..

Would be seen from the beach

and the treacherous swell

it had always been known for

and further

beyond, through the remnants

of now faded lace curtains ..

Once a gift, on her wedding day

over forty or so, very long years ago ..

Yes. I noticed. You changed the years from thirty to forty:) You took me to the harbour at Brixham where we quite often talk to the fishermen. It isn’t difficult to imagine the losses over the years when the sea turns cruel and there are cottages high in the cliffs with net curtains where women like the one in your poem may have lit candles for their lost loves. The love letters a poignant touch of the constant ache of grief. A reminder of how dangerous the sea can become. Nicely composed Neville.

Gee
This brings to mind the lifeboat tragedy in the early 80's where numerous lives lost, both volunteers and the folk being rescued. Brave folk those that lay their lives on the line out of a sense of duty to mankind.
Enjoyed this early morning read Neville.
Hope you are well and ready for the arrival of the big fat fella in red...obviously not the local postie as he and his mates are on strike for more wedge and probably the supply of long trousers for the winter months as corn beef legs not a good look :)
