Mary

There she was,

carved

in feint relief

for all the world

to see ..

Held fast tween

grey space

and golden rays ..

Those that

yet survived

to shine

through broken

stained glass

window shards ..

And smiled

upon the alter,

aisle and down

among

the gathered

congregation ..

There were

of course those

among them,

who swore that

it was Mary ..

And one or two

even left

an extra penny

in the collection box ..

Beautiful imagery here Neville. Although I no longer attend church, I do on occasion visit for the sense of peace they offer. Blind faith comes to mind here. Let them believe what they choose if it helps them travel what can be very difficult pathways for some. These days I light candles at home to pay my respects. Your mum’s name I recall is Mary and I also heard Paul McCartney’s Mother Mary filter through the ether this grey morning. A fine piece of poetry where I travelled to many places.

I hope they weren't on consecrated ground while swearing it was her Nev!
Honestly, aren't they meant to set a better example to the young uns and the not as sainted?
Maybe those extra pennies were to ward off more our fathers and hello dollies at their next confession! 😊
