Advice on Avoiding Pedestals

 

Be sure to avoid all bandwagons

and pedestals my dear,

 

  at all costs and your own peril ..

Don’t worry though,

 

  despite my burning up like this ..

Should I die tonight,

you can bet on all of my bones,

   I won’t go quietly ..

But screaming and kicking with

   all of my might ..

  

I refuse to be that kind of victim ..

I mean a quiet one,

and to become less than nothing

but a small collection

 

  of buried old bones, or white ash,

stuck in a bowl

and displayed, beneath a marital

bed or indeed upon

a mantelshelf somewhere quietly

gathering familial dust

with no hope of resuming any of

my former unfulfilled

 

hopes and quietly unacquired glories ..

So just to be sure then,

avoid bandwagons and all of those

associated pedestals

  

  en route and at all costs, since they

serve no true useful

   

purpose on this sad old earth of ours ..

Such sage advice Neville. I am reminded that yesterdays heroes become todays tyrants (well for some anyway). You gave me images of toppled statues. I hate the desecration of art. Surely it should be a history lesson and not wiped out as though it never existed. I have just read Soren’s excellent response. I do like his thinking. I thought of Dylan Thomas here too. Yes, go out with a bang, not a whimper my friend:) I like the idea of scattered ashes. Now that is freedom. Not buried in a plot or kept in a bloody pot:)) Wishing you a very long life:)

Band wagons and pedestals seem like the domain of politicians but maybe we could make allowances for religions, news media, universities, science in general well I guess the world has changed or maybe always been this way for it seems that people in general love band wagons and pedestals. A wonderful write in flowing meter and verse. A message that needs to be heard.
