Fear of Word Blindness

Fear of Word Blindness

A Poem by Neville

Fear of Word Blindness

Banks of blank ivorine

stacked high but

thinly like old oriental

  lacquered tsuba ..

Each scream both loud

and high enough

to shatter those fragile

hand blown

champagne flutes you

  long treasured ..

Whereas, somewhere

else completely,

rows of old scribes sit

cross legged

 in their temples calmly

contemplating

white noise but fearing

word blindness

tho still craving obscurity ..

This poem has so much in it that I can relate to my friend. I wrote a poem once called Silver Linings which covered a moment when a whole shelf of cut glass shifted. I lost champagne flutes that were a wedding gift. Also I had a spell of word blindness which basically meant I wasn’t interpreting correctly written words. Stress can cause that. It’s gone now. This is packed with metaphors and other stuff. I could write a book about it. There’s a lot of noise here, white noise and shattering glass but nothing to be worried about. You have an amazing ability to turn the everyday into thoughtful poetry Neville.

This is so odd and thought provoking. What was the inspiration behind it?

Oh wow, there is no Fave button on this site! The permanence that word provides obliterates obscurity.

I hear ya! Now go catch that flight🕊️🙏
I didn't know what tsuba was Nev, so I just pictured my special edition black scrabble tiles with white lettering instead, but instead of printers I pictured weary monks hand engraving them instead, which surely would have been a special edition indeed!
I do have certain word blindness, but only in posh restaurants where they call tomato on toast bruschetta. I insist on calling it tomato on toast and tell them they are highway robbers for charging twenty quid for it!
But at least my fear of word blindness wouldn't end my career. Well not unless a new rule says we all have to write in scrabble tiles! 😃

I enjoyed this as one of my first reads when I am literally back from the dead. A complex piece illustrating an ironical mind. Excellent.
