Somewhere Near the Far Side of Insight

Somewhere Near the Far Side of Insight

A Poem by Neville
"

why not just suck it and see ..

"

Somewhere Near the Far Side of Insight

I don’t just look and see,

but I watch

and I savour and I learn

and then I try

to hoard what I find like

you would

small golden treasures ..

Each strung out

like pretty bunting across

the skyline of

an unfamiliar and all too

brief lifetime ..

As tiny and crisscrossed

as the faintest

of cracks in small glazed

earthenware pots ..

Still here, in my very own

shell I pretend

to bathe in old sunlight ..

While casually

wondering just how many

more wasted

horizons, sunsets, faces

and views,

shall eventually become

little more than

vague opaque scenes each

etched upon

the tired old retinas of this

nameless and near

forgotten mans fading dreams ..

Good for you Neville....there is nothing like insight, the ability not only to look, see, but the ability to understand clearly, and deeply, not just on the surface....to intuit, ...and that is a wonderful trait...
I understand you will be discovering many treasures on your trip to S. America...Safe travels
and bring back lots of wonderful writing!

This is more than just a true artist speaking. He is doing what all such should do and that is really looking and trying to understand. Excellent.

It IS like hoarding isn't it? How beautiful it is to feel it through your eyes. Thank you. The prose here is impeccable. I like the ethereal yet casual feel of it.

The way you capture that quiet obsession with collecting experiences..“small golden treasures strung out like pretty bunting”..and the way it contrasts with the impermanence of life and memory. There’s a gentle ache in the acknowledgment of fading horizons and tired retinas, yet it’s tempered by the careful savoring of each moment. It reads like a reflection on both the beauty and fragility of existence, and the longing to hold onto what slips away.

Neville, wishing you both safety and joy on your travels. Enjoy.

I couldn't possibly ask for more, bless you Roma ..
There’s a wistful grace in how you hold the tension between curiosity and decay. The opening line tempts us to just live, but the poem becomes a quiet confession that we can’t help wanting to understand what we live through. “small golden treasures” turn perception into something tenderly obsessive. It reads like a soft archaeology of the self...dusty, luminous, and heartbreakingly human.
Nicely done, mate!

Thanks a minion Jansy .. sure gonna try 👍
I relate to this because my Mum wasted away to dementia, as well as the gg forgotten forgetfulness that was coved lockdown.
Ever since then my memory is like Swiss cheese but if I haven't thought of the wording was looking for within five seconds, I let it go and stop worrying, hoping it will come back on its own.
The first time I forgot something quite serious my doctor strangely told me to keep a diary of lost words. After explaining himself a bit more by telling me to write down what I was saying up to the point of forgetting and read it every day to see if anything came back. It did, but when I realised that I had been planning for the month ahead and scrubbing out something on a list I remembered the word I had forgotten was Tuesday, which made me feel even worse.
Now I still keep that diary as well as photographs of interesting things, like leaves in autumn or frost on barbed wire surrounding a field, just in case one day I forget to remember all the nondescript things I like looking at.
Memory is a treasure we don't appreciate enough until it is too late.
Now fingers, knees and toes crossed for your okay to travel and enjoy whatever the opposite of drizzle and dullness is. 😀

How exciting for you to embark on a three week trip of South America. An opportunity for those tired retinas to find a new lease of life. I love your title. It speaks to me of pushing boundaries.
