For All Those Who Have Not Yet Known Hunger

For All Those Who Have Not Yet Known Hunger

A Poem by Neville

For All Those Who Have Not Yet Known Hunger

For all those who have not

   yet known hunger

then let me tell you all this ..

I for one, have

always known hunger since

first being torn

from the comfort of my own

   mother’s womb ..

In fact, it’s a fact, that I have

   always felt hungry ..

Hungry for light and for truth

   and for knowledge

and all with such a thirst for

   my personal gain ..

Indeed, how I ache and I lust

and desire for just

that right amount of perfect

pitched pain you

  always beat your drum about

since we first met,

all those long and lost years ago ..

But for now, I want to

make a simple statement of fact ..

And then to set all

these old records each straight ..

So get this my friend

and once and for all, I don’t want

to climb any magnificent

mountains, or to swim in some

  f*****g great lake ..

And nor do I want, to just sit still

and to contemplate

spaces or for that matter those

places, I have only

ever been to inside my own head ..

Oh yes indeed, I have

always been this insatiably hungry ..

But until recently,

had lost all my appetite for bread,

for fruit and for meat ..

Although it is true, I still squat at

  the same table just

marking time and caressing each

one of those pretty,

scented pulses of yours while you

count slow and loud

   dissatisfied, singular, heartbeats ..

Yes those, which seem

to occur somewhere between

your anxiety attacks

and my solitary bid for true freedom ..

This reminded me of a very recent conversation i had with a friend regarding the crumblies, a group of older folk we help from time to time through our work and the conversation was ultimately about the war generation versus the millennials and how one generation had to make do and mend, using every scrap for such interesting and varied things, while the other generation just got handed everything and expected more, then whined about no one understanding them and going off in a sulk. (Im guessing you don't have to be a rocket surgeon to guess which one is which.)
Bit without the hunger within us, what else would there be. We'd all be annoyingly content with everything and just living off the fat of the land, which is a phrase I never thought id ever use, but hey!
Sounds to me like valentines day should involve absolutely no effort from you, or the very least you can summon.
Maybe even buy her a lump of coal and tell her to sit on it and quit her bitchin' and see if she can turn it into a diamond! 😀
(Sorry to all the romantisists out there, but they should really get over themselves and demand equality every day of the year. Maybe you should demand your free diamond ring from her!) 😀
Ps...and people thought i was only the prince at christmas! 😀

Read this several times Neville. Your words speak to me about that need to feel hunger to survive life in a meaningful way. I think many of us born in the fifties know all about this. If you have everything given to you on a plate, how would you ever feel true contentment. How would you ever be satisfied with nothing to work or aim for. The she here who has her pretty scented pulses caressed lovingly by you sounds as though she don’t appreciate how damn lucky she is. Today is Valentine’s Day. Maybe it is your turn to be pampered and appreciated. And if I have read this at all wrong, I will say sorry in advance. We have blue sky this morning and sun. Very welcome after days of continual rain.
