In The Long Shadow of Fast Clocks

In The Long Shadow of Fast Clocks

A Poem by Neville

In The Long Shadow of Fast Clocks

is a fast clock

more alive than one

   that runs slow ..

or does it just seem

that way, while

   we are busy passing ..

still, when we

are young, we all joke

about that

   sore point of beauty ..

where the bud

has become bruised

and beyond,

a point of full bloom ..

the very same

point, when it is no

longer perfect,

 much like fresh milk,

which has

thus become tainted

or curdled

and our blue veins

   all ballooned ..

indeed, that’s when it

first struck me,

how the whole of my

life is somehow

determined by time

and ruled by a

series of back on back

   tiny moments ..

those which somehow

serve to inform

my sense of direction

and helped me

to arrive at my latest

and boldest of

conclusions that life is

a solitary game

and I’m now prepared

to confess, I don’t

know any of the rules ..

and I cannot

seem to find the right

words to fill this

 partially completed page ..

Are you feeling bruised and curdled? Well if you are, you are in good company. That’s what the passing years do to ya. As for clocks I try not to look at them too often and stopped wearing a wristwatch when I retired from paid work. Time flies when you are having fun and it crawls when crap’s on the doorstep. But then when I think about birthdays, they seem to arrive at speed and so does Christmas each year. No sooner than the fairy lights are put away, they’re back out again. Life is a lot of routine, boring but necessary to keep us on the straight and narrow. I think Neville, you have found very adequate words to sum up long shadows and fast clocks. I’m trying very hard not to think about that final curtain. Got too much yet to do.

Me neither Nev. Sometimes I feel like the stars of my own Truman show where you don't quite know what makes you do the same things day in, day out but you have a sneaking suspicion that this soundtrack has been played before.
Sadly I remember youth, with all its bouncing out of bed, eager to meet the day head on. Yet now its more that i graloan myself out off bed, take three times as long to wake up and only then to a point where it feels like life is both speeding up and slowing down at the same time. Then you have the morning horror show of wondering if the bathroom mirror has been replaced by some horrendous Bosch painting that leaves you on pause as you wonder if you are the one thats real or the one on the other side of the mirror. And thats all before I've even summoned up the nerve to look at the clock, which constantly leaves me in disbelief that I've yet again woken at 2:30 am for what reason I have no answer to. But then as you make your way to work that clock magic goes the other way and you would swear it must be lunchtime until you look and its only quarter past nine.
But hey, at least it gives me time to catch up on today's helplessness that is the news and weather.
They may as well change the news to a picture of an old man holding up a sign that says bleak!
So how was your Monday? 😃
