A House That Held Love

A House That Held Love

A Poem by Ngirai

One morning, I see you smiling as you lift me up and carry me home.
All these memories inside were made for me and you.
I've heard in this little town that you weren't a great person.

Who do they know? A house was built for me.
Now all I see are flames burning through the ceilings.
I had a dream you were walking through flames as I saw you disappearing into the fire.

All these rumors fly, and I know they're not meant to hurt us.
It was my childhood home that you built.
Growing up feeling alone, no one cared once you left this world.
I had to deal with it on my own, faking smiles and broken promises.

Falling in love was hard in a world where no one sees as you do.
You said I should grow up and get married,
But you didn't get to see me build a family of my own.
Maybe it's all fantasy and a dream.
Now I see my house burning in flames, and maybe it was me walking through the fire.

All I could say was that we were promised a life,
To fulfill those dreams and make them come true.
But I guess that's what they tell you in movies"
In real life, it's often not true, a fiction told from generation to generation.
So I watch my house burn down little by little,
As my own world crumbles.
A house that was built for me. I know you loved me,
But I will find my way someday.

Every time I think of you, I have to keep myself strong.
Maybe one day I will be like you,
But a different version of you.
Maybe this nightmare will end
If I become true to myself and not let others tell me what to do.
Thank you, Dad, and I love you with all my heart.
