I Can See It

I Can See It

Written for a friend

"

You think you're hopeless.

So far beyond redemption,

you deny yourself

even the dream of deserving to be saved.

You're stuck in the dark

with your fears

whispering of a person

you won't allow yourself to forget.

Or forgive.

You think you remember a light,

but it was extinguished long ago.

In your eyes

the light is out.

In your heart

the spark is gone.

But I can see it.

I see a man

free from his past

and running toward his future.

Or maybe just walking,

because in this moment

there is nothing to run from.

But I see the fears returning in the night.

I see you writhing in your sleep,

waking up drenched in a cold sweat

mid-scream.

You think you are turning back

into the tormented soul

you used to be.

Then I see an arm

drape over you,

pulling you in

and pushing your fears away.

You will be loved.

I can see it.

I see the day you've been waiting for;

the day you meet your first child.

I see you pace around the room,

hear pounding as you wait.

What if you're a bad father?

What if you find your child

comforting YOU after a nightmare?

All those mistakes you made...

What if they come back

and ruin everything?

You don't think you're ready.

But because of how you worry

about being the perfect father

I know you are ready.

I can see it.

I can see you

teaching your son

to make the right choices

and I see you telling him

that he is never alone.

I see you letting your little girl

pick out the color you are going to dye your mow hawk.

I see you

instilling in her

the confidence to be herself

without apology.

The father- the daddy- you're going to be;

I can see him.

You are not hopeless.

You are not alone.

You hold the key

to a door that will change everything.

You only have to believe.

The door you will open,

the path you will walk,

the light you will find.

I can see it.

But you have to see it too.

Do you?

Do you see it flickering in the distance?

Even a "lil bit" is enough.

Now,

go get it.
