Picture of Success

Jumping off of the empire state building is not
 an appropriate use of resources:
That would be going to architecture school

(after that degree in Business which turned out to be more fail than safe)

What an idea: I love walls and ceilings and floors.
People nod and seem impressed…but I think it’s
More because of the word.

Architecture.
It sounds scientific.
Don’t you think? Don’t you all think?

After:
Standing here at the drafting board gripping the edges,
the tip of the empire state.
gaping off at the horizon of what nexts.
It’s a steep fall and only captain crunch lies at the bottom.

Amid the flood of corn squares
the successful squares
are the berries destroyed so soon
by the greedy Horatio Magellans.

The crisp diploma that turns to dust as soon as it hits the desk.
Anthropologists look through the microscope to see examine
evaluate What was me and my success (or lack of it).
Whether they are one and the same.

go back to being an administrative assistant.
leave my degrees that digress.

The opening is fantastic! I never knew architecture and Captain Crunch could make such a beautiful collaboration. I must say, the berries being destroyed by the "greedy Horatio Magellens" made me laugh hysterically. For that, I thank you! Having a sister who graduated under civil engineering, and now sells life insurance, I can't help but think of her as I read this. What a world....
