Faithless

Faithless

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Faithless

I dare not contemplate

this dream

for it has taken too many

changes of the moon

to reach my world.

Too many cycles of the sun

have passed and scorched my flesh

till my bones are arid dry.

For too long I have lived

in this abyss of sadness,

that deep and empty place

where hope has no light

and the energy of love

dare not evoke the demons

that guard hate so well.

Is this the basis of all religion? ....that our weakness as a species is that we can only remain pragmatic in acceptance of `what is` for so long and so far before we start wishing for more? The last two lines of the poem reveal the need to try to exorcise that part of `us` we regard as `sinful`. A very thought provoking poem, John. P.

Thank you Pete for such a considered review.
Maybe 'dares' not evoke the demons ...' I am wondering how Sartre managed and Voltaire. Pascal's interesting but he was a betting man.

Excuse-moi?
No matter how deep you fall into the abyss, light will always shine upon you.

Unless you are a poet lol!
even contemplating brings sadness---deep in the abyss this one...but well penned to get that feeling of hopelessness.

Hi Jacob, thank you. I assure you this was simply a poem.
This speaks to me on a personal level, as I have experienced my fair share of pain. So much emotion is packed into this. If you have not done so, I would highly recommend that you publish a collection of your work. It would certainly sell!

The only thing I noticed was the coupling of the words "arid dry" seemed a little awkward to read. I don't know if that's just me, but perhaps another synonym would work? That's my two cents at least.

Now you're starting to sound like me John! This is such a dire reflection of the dark space that takes up residence in our soul sometimes. So brilliantly pen'd!

Ah Ha! but I write as poetry not as life as it is for moi!
The first few lines are just wonderful, "too many changes of the moon" Wow!

Sometimes, we get used to hate, to sadness, to an extent that we forget what love was. And so even when it comes our way, we either don't understand it or are too afraid to feel it. We may feel we do not deserve it....

So incredibly said here....

"that deep and empty place
where hope has no light
and the energy of love
dare not evoke the demons
that guard hate so well

Beautiful poetry John! And I can't wait to read more!

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
