Shadows of Silence

Shadows of Silence

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Shadows of Silence

In the shadow of your silence

I weep sad and quiet tears,

life’s blood,

dripping from my fractured heart,

broken by so many careless hands

that let it crash upon cold flint floors.

In the shadow of your silence

I see cloaked demons

lurking in the dark recesses of my mind,

waiting to steal my soul,

as long minutes turn to hours

and the hours bond to night.

In the shadow of your silence

my dreams are icy cold,

old nightmares come to haunt me

and the sleeping Earth draws

dark curtains across my eyes

till I am blind, naked and exposed.

"in the shadow of your silence"
that may seem almost a simple line, but it is not..

that concept is powerful...silence does cast such a shadow on relationships...no words can be more powerful than a tirade..

and then there is silence...that causes dreams to become icy cold..

that part actually made me have one of those shivers...reading it.

this is dark, cold and intensely good in its imagery.

I like the repetition of the title throughout the poem and the dark and vivid imagery about being truly vulnerable. Very nice write John!

Thank you so much Jeff!
In the shadow of your silence...oh the connotations of those words. Do we mean another person in the room, do we mean the inner voice that's gone silent, do we mean the maddening chaos that surrounds? My vote is for that inner voice. When it's silent it is maddening, dreams do go cold, and it does fee like we are dead. Great imagery in this piece. Very thought inspiring.

Thank you Kristin. Its about someone not communicating!
Uh-oh. I hope the gates of communication open soon, lest your neurosis show ;-) Oops...too late! I felt this in my bones, all kidding apart, John...I know what it's like to sit in a room with someone and be completely alone. Granted, I prefer that to the alternative, mindless chit chat about nothing, or the ugly alternative, serious conversations that lead to arguments...you know what? Communication is highly over rated xD Enjoy the silence while it lasts *laugh*

Nice work, my friend.

Always my pleasure, John...
I sense mental illness in this poem.. or just the feeling of loss so strongly that it slowly drives one insane. Silence can be difficult to deal with, especially if it lasts for a long time. I've dealt with it from both ends. I like the darker tones of this piece and the images you portray. This is really well crafted.

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
