My Ethereal Lover

My Ethereal Lover

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

My Ethereal Lover

I think of you

and am afraid.

Fear of past deceit

grips me by my throat.

You are too beautiful,

too young, too perfect.

your words ooze honey

and I am immersed in you.

But I see and feel the past

and it is a dangerous place

where devils wait to lure me with their siren calls.

I see us with a babe in arms

and oh, oh how I yearn for that.

You captured me, heart and soul

then blunted my faith with your own fear.

But we both held onto that small hope,

that the sun would shine again.

I loved you from your words alone,

hung on every syllable

that wafted in ethereal, gentle mists

across the pages of my thoughts

until I was so deep

that we were lovers before we met.

And now I am so deep

that I am drowned.

I once fell in love with someone before we actually met...a long story, but this reminded me of it. A most tender, and honest rendering, John.
