First Do No Harm (Norwegian Wood)

First Do No Harm (Norwegian Wood)

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

First Do No Harm (Norwegian Wood)

Something dark has happened to your soul,

as if it has been placed in a furnace,

Hellish hot,

for too long,

and has lost all of its goodness;

baked until blackened and dry and cracked,

so that, if moved,

pieces flake off and fall to earth.

You once told me your central tenet was

‘First do no harm’

but the lies and hurt you told,

burnt like acid on my heart,

questioning your integrity,

your sincerity in this matter.

The lyrics of ‘Norwegian Wood’

play in a loop in my head,

‘I once had a girl,

or should I say she once had me.’

and I have been well and truly

had!

Alas, the know the bitter ending all too well...
I've gotta say, that lyric gets to me every time. John's voice simply resonates through the years. Wonderful concept you used, John!

Thank you so much Kelly. His voice is so haunting.
From the "Rubber Soul" album.....and it's funny, both Kelly Scheppers and I have mentioned that song in poetry we have written. It must have been a song that strummed something in the poet's imagination, eh? The emotional hurt and the loss of a romance is described eloquently here. How can people change so easily? I often wonder. Well written, John. lydi**
