First Do No Harm (Norwegian Wood)A Poem by John Alexander McFadyenFirst Do No Harm (Norwegian Wood) Something dark has happened to your soul, as if it has been placed in a furnace, Hellish hot, for too long, and has lost all of its goodness; baked until blackened and dry and cracked, so that, if moved, pieces flake off and fall to earth. You once told me your central tenet was ‘First do no harm’ but the lies and hurt you told, burnt like acid on my heart, questioning your integrity, your sincerity in this matter. The lyrics of ‘Norwegian Wood’ play in a loop in my head, ‘I once had a girl, or should I say she once had me.’ and I have been well and truly had!
