Old Hands

Old Hands

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

The march of time!

"

Old Hands

I have old hands.

They have become wrinkled with time

and stained in the discoloration

of age.

I have put it off,

put it out of my mind,

tried to conceal it

from my conscience.

The acceptance that my children

now rule the earth,

that I am now redundant

no matter the education I have acquired

which has brought me wisdom.

And it does not matter how

fervently I writhe against

the passage of time,

I am consigned to history.

Sometimes the skin reflects life...would it be that we only focused on the soul, maybe then we would not feel so hopeless at times, love n light John x

Love n light precious one.
I do understand the words ....and feel them. There comes a time when we reflect on who we were and who we now are....a time when we realize we are the older generation and are not as vibrant and purposeful as we once were. It is not a good feeling. I don't think, though, we are consigned to only history just yet. We have a lot more to give, John...you poetry proves this! Lydi**

I know this feeling, but knowing my kids, it couldn't be in better hands. I really enjoyed this one John.

Many thanks WW.
I think we all fear becoming redundant, superfluous. But, I don't think it's meant to be that way. Think about our retirement communities and nursing homes. Think of the experience and history shuttered away there, forgotten.

My ten year old son visits at a local nursing home. He loves to just hang out and talk with the folks. And they love to talk with him. They're interested in what he has to say and they want to share their stories. I don't believe those folks are redundant. They are living history waiting to be shared.

My avatar made you think I'm a man? Um? It's just a classic shield with a stylized monogram.

But is is very male in its symbolism. Sorry!

Okay. My goal was something professional and timeless and simple and direct. It's my personal logo.
I really like this one, we all walk that walk at some time, me, my time will come much later though! But time flies by and the days end so fast. With just a blink, it's already time to go to sleep, or as for me time to go to work. LOL

Thank you for sharing John, nicely done! :)

I didn't realise anyone worked so hard in the good old US of A! Well done.

hahaha, I lot of people work hard, they just live in the shadows I guess..and Thanks!
wow what a concept---we get to a certain age and realize we are simply history now...no more new inroads for us to make...our lives become redundant and we have achieved already whatever is we were meant to achieve.

Not sure I am quite that far down the road but many roads I have no need to travel now. Many thanks .. read more

John … that is why God made botox and skin whitener… I kid … just trying to lighten the mood … but yes everyone must pass away and some will be remembered in history and some will not. I guess all we can do is make sure those hands, forever how long they last, bring love and acceptance. A really wonderful and expressive white. Big fan of this one:)

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
