Great ExpectationsA Poem by John Alexander McFadyenLove we seek.Great Expectations Love is not profound for it is too subjective. It is merely feelings linked to concepts. Learned values and constructs unique to each one of us that we then superimpose upon an unsuspecting world and add to the swirling mix of indistinct ideas that become our shared cultural reality. But still we search for notions of perfection, for the ideal romance, the kind we heard as innocent children, told in fairy tales like Cinderella or Snow White. But had we been taught of the fuzzy boundaries and the slippages of fixed concepts, and how interpreted utterance modifies the context and context the meaning, then perhaps our expectations would be more realistic and our demands of love less severe and more enduring.
