A Life Denied

A Life Denied

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

When love is elusive

"

A Life Denied

I breathe shallow within this fragile frame

in case I should crack and shatter like eggshell.

My heart has atrophied with each savage blow

that the years have dealt me,

until a shrivelled raisin, black and dried

of the once plump life of my thriving vine.

No more the meaty, pumping organ of life

but simply a deflated empty bag of offal.

Time stretches in its cold and brittle stillness,

and I stand naked and alone

as the air is sucked from my failing lungs

where love refuses to dwell.

And on my knees, I beseech the earth

to end the torment

or free me forever from this agony.

"atrophied" is a great word...and yes, when the heart has weakened this much, the will to live dissipates----and all we feel like doing is leaving this earth in order to return to it, and find peace in solitude and death.

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
