Make A Meal of It

Make A Meal of It

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Food is good!

"

Make A Meal Of It

Lamb,

fresh,

succulent

and juicy;

sitting at rest

on the carving board,

infused

with garlic

and fresh rosemary

from the cottage garden.

Aromas that get our

gastric juices flowing

waft from the warm

bosom of Mother's kitchen.

Carved in moist slices

and served with

caramelised, roasted

vegetables

and roast potatoes,

browned to crisp

exterior perfection,

with fluffy, creamy

hearts.

A marinated red wine

gravy, flavoured with onion

and the fresh running

bloodied myoglobin

that flows in aromatic

rivers from cooked

red meat.

Accompanied by

a lovely fruity

Bordeaux,

Clos du Marquis 2001 St-Julien

will suffice

with its

lovely cassis fruit flavour,

intermixed with underbrush,

earth, and subtle background oak.

To follow,

the quintessential apple pie,

with its understated sweet tartness,

encased in a butter short crust pastry

and served with softly whipped cream.

For those with fortitude,

selected cheeses and biscuits,

with black grapes

and Harrods Hawaiian coffee

with dark, rich chocolate,

peppermint thins

to end.

Now that's a Sunday lunch!

Heck that's better than my Christmas dinner John.
There's not too many poems that I ever felt like eating but I did feel like eating this one. Hey I might print it off on some rice paper.
Sumptuous descriptive piece John!

Thanks Tony. Glad you digested this piece. My partner told me I had made a meal of it!
i am hungry now!! great use of imagery! all my senses excited ..and my mind raced to my own mom's table and kitchen when we were treated to lamb .. oh how i can smell everything and more as you have left nothing out of your poem ..with churning gullet and salivating mouth .. i am signing off the cafe to at least have my meager breakfast; but thinking of lamb the whole time ;) nice one John!

Thank you Einstein, and I hope breakfast suffices for now!

it was nothing like your poem! ;)
The food is heavenly but the beauty is in the details, the way you describe it, with so much emotion. The Sunday Lunch is sacred and every dish has family traditions and memories attached to it. No wonder the food sounds so divine and thank you for sharing it with us John.

Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
