For What We Strive

For What We Strive

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Our heaven is often a false promise.

"

For What We Strive

In Magna Graecia,

on the Gulf of Toranto,

between the Crathis and the Sybaris

lies a hedonistic city.

An Achaean colony that its oekist,

Is of Helice created.

Great wealth amassed

thanks to its fertile soil

and busy sea port,

allowing the residents

to live life to the full.

And they lived it!

But it never lasted;

for who can sleep

upon folded rose petals

when pursuing

opulent luxury

and outrageous pleasure?
