Already Awaiting SpringA Poem by John Alexander McFadyenWe have to look forward.Already
Awaiting Spring Yellow, browned leaves drop to mellow earth to crisp and crumble and ferment in the dark soil, or to be blown under hedgerows, or swept up from lawns and paths and binned in black incinerator bags by the gardener. Grey clouds sweep across our skies blotting out the sun and helping the east wind to cut us to the core under the protection of that dank blanket. Night now approaches fast in its dark cloak, and refuses to leave in the early morning dawn to let the sun return with a spring in its step and warm the air and the sea and the land. We don out sweaters, thick woollen socks and heavy overcoats, in an attempt to thwart the freeze, but we are simply playing the no-win game until the thaw of spring arrives.
