Broad Church

Broad Church

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Religion, I ask you!

"

Fried fish

for Friday tea.

In a Catholic home

God gets his wicked way each day,

Amen!

A poet I know well and like. Here a bitter, sarcastic but also witty poke at the Catholic Church, which deserves all the criticism it gets..

Indeed a poke at Catholicism in all its guises. Many thanks Leslie.
LOL, this made me laugh my head off. Love it John. When most Catholics want to go to the pub, get drunk and eat meat.

Love the internal rhyme in the fourth line, and the use of 'amen' at the end to add to the religious significance. Also the whole fish/religion thing feels pretty poignant, the allegory of the feeding of the 5000 comes to mind, and drawing it parralel with the mundane British chippy is great!

There are hundreds of thousands of us in the same boat. Reading Dan Brown's 'Origin' brings it home!
Lol, I had to laugh at Jacob's regurgitating a hot dog! Indeed, I remember the sorbid tales of nuns my mother used to speak of at catholic school, and oh, the fear it instilled in me.
