Drinking Games

Drinking Games

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

There in the valley of death

lay I,

It is my corpse

but not my body.

I am dismembered,

gutted,

but I see the battlefield

from on high.

Way above the clouds

I look down on the skirmishes,

the blood letting,

the crimes against humanity

and feel detached,

soberly so,

although far from sober.

This needy intoxication

takes me beyond any

reasonable doubt

that my perceived insanity has,

and always will, show

me the path to salvation's

darker arms.

Fine poem that I enjoyed, and made me think about alcohol and literature, about Dylan Thomas the 18 pint man or the lost soul Malcolm Lowry..alcohol both a blessing and a curse, and this poem excellently gets it.

Thank you Leslie. I guess it is true to say that art and literature are littered with creative souls.. read more

you`re welcome
I've been around a few and one quite close to me, always denying he had a problem. It's so sad to watch them destroying themselves and having to stand by feeling helpless, while they think that they're the ones in control. Well written John.

somber and foreboding my friend :( great title ..full of irony says i! i once had a little red sports car (TR3) 1963 ... and i dreamed i was in a crash with that car and i floated above the scene ... watching the first responders, me Ma and one of me Aunts all distressed and crying ... i wanted so bad to tell them it was OK ... it wasn't so bad!! of course the line of communication was off ;) and honestly .. that dream felt so real i was afraid to drive that car for months afterwards :) anyway .. the social commentary on war is in vivid contrast to the forgetful land of drunkenness ..funny how they seem to go together somehow .. hmm Proverbs 31:7 "Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more." ... even God understands the human need for some kind of respite at times eh!?
fine poem says i!

Excellent. I have never been so adventurous.
Salvation's darker arms, yes that is drink for you. Got a problem? Drink it away. If it doesn't go, have another and so on and so forth. Well penned John. I have known many a drinker sadly.

A drinker drinks until the thoughts are thunk, and realises after all, let's have another drink, haha, I agree with KWP, reads like one of mine,
