John,
I was vaguely familiar with this powerfully dangerous bird, but until reading your Senryu in homage, I was never before interested in researching it. Having just finished reading up on this very capable animal, I am truly impressed by its 2 m (6.6 ft) maximum height, 60 kg (133 lb) weight, and its straight, dagger-like 125 mm (5 in) long claws that it uses to powerfully kick animals and humans with its extremely powerful legs.
Other animals, including humans, have actually been killed by this enormous wingless fowl.
If I'd wondered why this bird would deserve such an excellently composed poem, I no longer do.
Great work, My friend, and an amazingly apt photo of the Cassowary in action … sheesh, I'd not want it after me! ⁓ Richard 🍃

Like you I looked it up and was shocked I new the name but little else. I also learned that a) one should stay clear of these fellows and b) the only defense (if you don't have a gun) is to place a barrier between you and hope the bird gets bored and wanders off. Hellish if you meet a pair I guess! I went on to try a less serious write about it.
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
